
Physician Assistant (PA) / Nurse Practitioner (NP) – Operating Room First Assist - Surgical Services

Schedule: 8 Hour Shifts schedule to be determined. This is a salaried position.
Position Summary:
We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Physician Assistant (PA) or Nurse Practitioner (NP) to join our surgical team as a First Assist in the Operating Room (OR). This role involves direct patient care before, during, and after surgical procedures, with a primary focus on intraoperative assistance to the surgeon.
Key Responsibilities:
Preoperative Duties:
- Conduct preoperative assessments and obtain patient history.
- Collaborate with surgical team to plan procedures.
- Educate patients and families about the surgical process, risks, and postoperative care.
- Assist with preparation of the OR and surgical instruments.
Intraoperative Duties:
- Serve as First Assist in surgeries, including:
- Tissue handling, exposure, suctioning, hemostasis, and suturing.
- Use of surgical instruments, retraction, and closure under supervision of surgeon.
- Monitor patient status and assist with positioning, prepping, and draping.
- Ensure adherence to sterile techniques and operating room protocols.
Postoperative Duties:
- Perform wound care and dressing changes, cast application/removal.
- Assess patient recovery and participate in postoperative rounds.
- Provide patient education on injury prevention, treatment plans, and post-surgical care.
- Document all care provided in EMR.
- Collaborate with surgeons, physical therapist, and other healthcare professionals.
- Coordinate discharge instructions and follow-up care.
Qualifications:
- Current licensure as a Physician Assistant (PA-C) or Nurse Practitioner (NP) in California.
- First Assist certification or completion of accredited First Assist training program required
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills.
- Ability to work in a fast-paced, high-stress environment.
- Strong knowledge of Orthopedic, Urological, General and Gynecological conditions and treatment, Robotics.
- Ability to perform diagnostic and therapeutic procedures.
- Excellent organizational and time-management skills.
- Strong attention to detail and problem-solving abilities.
- Current BLS and ACLS certifications.
- Minimum 2-3 years of surgical or OR experience preferred.
- Proficient knowledge of surgical techniques, instruments, and sterile procedures.
- Strong interpersonal, communication, and decision-making skills.
Working Conditions:
- Exposure to surgical environments, bodily fluids, and sharps.
- Standing for extended periods during procedures.
- Participation in on-call rotation may be required.
