Behavioral Health Care for People Experiencing Homelessness

LifeMoves is on the vanguard of innovative approaches to homelessness. Bringing 40 years of expertise in supporting people experiencing homelessness, LifeMoves has given our neighbors experiencing homelessness in Silicon Valley a temporary place to call home, as well as a range of supportive services and intensive, customized case management to help them meet life goals. Many people experiencing homelessness have mental and behavioral health conditions, which are contributing to or related to their life situation.

On any given night, LifeMoves feeds, clothes and houses about 1,300 people in 23 shelter and service sites, and in its most recent fiscal year, it returned more than 2,100 clients to stable housing. With support from the Community Benefit Program, LifeMoves is providing behavioral health screening and treatment at three of its centers in San Jose serving families, single women and LGBTQ+ single adults.

Behavioral health is often a root cause of homelessness, and ensuring people have easy access to the care they need can be challenging. LifeMoves is well positioned to reach those who need behavioral or mental health care and to follow up on their status and progress. Therapist interns work under the supervision of licensed psychologists to provide psychotherapy, group therapy, milieu therapy, art and expressive play therapy for children, and specialized services for victims of physical violence. LifeMoves also connects people to resources at El Camino Health and in the community to help support their progress.

LifeMoves is a valuable partner in improving care and access to behavioral health services, identified as a critical need in our 2022 Community Health Needs Assessment. See the complete list of grantees and sponsorships.
