Partner Spotlight: Breathe California Children’s Asthma Services

Community Benefit partner Breathe California envisions a world that promotes healthy lungs and a healthy environment. Using Community Benefit program funding, they provide asthma prevention management and education support for low-income children and families in San Jose and throughout Santa Clara County.

Breathing shouldn’t be a struggle or a risk. However, many people experience breathing issues when conditions like asthma affect lung health — especially children. If left unchecked, asthma can lead to frequent hospital visits, higher rates of absenteeism from school, and even low self-esteem and confidence.

In response, Community Benefit partner Breathe California of the Bay Area, Golden Gate and Central Coast routinely collaborates with San Jose and Santa Clara County schools, along with additional partners, to offer the Children’s Asthma Services program.

With Community Benefit program support, a program coordinator, community outreach specialist and other staff provide:

  • Asthma management education for elementary and middle-school-aged children with asthma during school, summer camps, or after-school or community programs
  • Asthma management training for parents and caregivers, as well as school or medical staff
  • Environmental assessments of homes, childcare facilities and schools
  • Promotion of COVID-19, flu and respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) vaccines
  • Respiratory therapy equipment, information and referrals

By educating others about lung health and asthma, Breathe California Children’s Asthma Services helps reduce the impact of a chronic respiratory disease in our community — identified as a critical need in the Implementation Strategy Report and Community Benefit Plan.
