More Than a Room: An Afternoon of Friendship, Stories, and the Heart of Healing
On February 5, book lovers and supporters from across the El Camino Health community came together for the 14th annual Norma’s Literary Luncheon. The afternoon that felt less like a formal event and more like a long-overdue conversation among friends. We gathered to remember and honor Norma Melchor, an early supporter whose belief in the power of a community hospital essentially wrote El Camino Health’s "Chapter One,” to celebrate reading and to support nursing excellence in our local health system. Proceeds of the event this year benefitted the new Normal Melchor Nursing Excellence Endowment.
As New York Times bestselling author and Pulitzer Prize finalist Karen Russell took the stage, she explained why she accepted the invitation to speak, soon after relocating her family to California from the East Coast. “I am so honored and overjoyed to be a part of Norma’s Literary Luncheon. The mission is so beautiful, and the love in this room is palpable. I was moved in the deepest ways Norma's caring, service, and philanthropy has evolved into this life-changing, wide-reaching, ongoing network of caring and support at El Camino Health. And I loved learning about her playful, joyful spirit too! The best medicine.”

Karen also shared on the enduring power of reading and connection and likened it to nursing. “When we read, we merge with the author’s conscience...Nurses ensure that our pain isn’t illegible.” This perfectly articulates the true heartbeat of our mission at El Camino Health: our nurses. Nurses provide the steady hand that helps a patient turn the page toward recovery. They are the living embodiment of the community spirit we felt so deeply during our event.
For those who were able to join us, the time together reminded us that we are part of a legacy of care and connection. If you weren't able to make it this time, we missed you.
P.S. As we looked around the room at so many familiar faces, we were reminded that our nurses provide that same sense of familiar comfort to our patients every day. If you have a story of a nurse who made a difference in your life, we’d love to hear it.
