El Camino Health Honored for Role in Pioneering Healthcare Technology

IEEE Milestone Recognizes Creation of One of the First Electronic Hospital Systems

May 15, 2026 - El Camino Health was honored by the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE), the world's largest technical professional organization advancing technology for the benefit of humanity. IEEE recognized the partnership of El Camino Health and Lockheed Martin for its historic role in the creation of one of the nation's first electronic health record systems to run across an entire hospital.

"The Medical Information System was more than a technological breakthrough - it was proof of what can happen when clinicians, engineers, administrators, and community leaders unite around a common goal: improving care for patients," said Dan Woods, chief executive officer of El Camino Health. "That same pioneering spirit of collaboration and innovation to heal people continues to guide El Camino Health today."

During a ceremony at the hospital campus at Mountain View, IEEE dedicated an official "IEEE Milestone" honoring this groundbreaking Medical Information System, named MIS-I. IEEE Milestones represent landmark achievements in technological innovation that advance humanity. Each milestone is commemorated with a bronze plaque, awarded by the IEEE History Committee and administered through the IEEE History Center.

"The IEEE Milestone program honors technological achievements that have changed the world, and El Camino Health and Lockheed Martin's Medical Information System is a clear example of that impact," said Brian Berg, IEEE history committee member. "This innovation demonstrated that digital systems can transform healthcare and influence generations of health technology, allowing patients to be a partner in their own health."

A Legacy of Innovation in Healthcare

This pioneering Medical Information System used innovative light-pen terminals with a computerized supporting infrastructure to enable physicians and staff across multiple departments to securely access patient information, enter orders, and streamline workflows. This technology allowed physicians and nurses to spend more time with patients and less time on paperwork, helped reduce costs, improved patient safety, and led the way toward the modern field of clinical informatics.

"It is an honor that the partnership between El Camino Health and Lockheed Martin that helped bring this visionary system to life is receiving this recognition," said Mark Pasquale, retired general manager, Lockheed Martin Space. "By combining engineering expertise with clinical insight, this collaboration created a model for how cross-industry partnerships can solve complex challenges and improve lives."

Shaping the Future of Digital Transformation
The pioneering work behind the Medical Information System continues to influence El Camino Health's approach to advancing healthcare technology today.

"While today's celebration recognizes a historic accomplishment, it also reminds us how that early vision continues to shape the patient-centered care environment we strive to create," said Deb Muro, chief information officer of El Camino Health. "This groundbreaking system has seen continuous improvement over the years based on the needs of patients and clinicians, and it remains central as we integrate advanced analytics, AI, and digital tools into healthcare delivery."

About the IEEE Milestones Program
IEEE's Milestones Program recognizes significant achievements in the history of IEEE fields of interest by placing bronze plaques where they occurred. It is a program of the IEEE History Committee, administered through the IEEE History Center. IEEE Milestones recognize the technological innovation and excellence for the benefit of humanity found in unique products, services, seminal papers and patents. Milestones honor the achievement, rather than a place or a person.
