Roots Community Health Center Takes Holistic Approach to Reducing Health Disparities

During Black History Month and throughout the year, Roots Community Health Center brings health services and education to African Americans across South Bay.

February is nationally recognized as Black History Month, and supporting health for our African American community members is a year-round priority for El Camino Health and its partners. Systemic inequality can dramatically increase health risks and result in health disparities in African Americans. Roots Community Health Center is one of our partners working to reduce these disparities. Taking a whole-health approach, Roots meets people where they are by taking services and education out into the community — to churches, sports tournaments, health fairs and other public events. They also help people with housing, health navigation and job readiness to help remove barriers to wellness and healthy living.

Community Benefit grant funding helps Roots provide targeted services and resources to reduce chronic conditions and encourage preventive health among those served across the South Bay. Services provided include:

  • Virtual and in-person programs, such as group wellness, health education sessions, exercise classes and cooking demonstrations
  • Promoting awareness, prevention and management at community events and health fairs
  • Providing glucose and blood pressure testing and health education at Little Heroes sports tournaments, places of worship and community centers
  • Following up with patients newly diagnosed with diabetes
  • Increasing public awareness about heart disease and healthy living through a targeted educational campaign

Roots Community Health Center is a vital partner in efforts to address diabetes and obesity, identified as critical needs in our 2022 Community Health Needs Assessment.
