Saratoga to Designate June as Men’s Health Month

Los Gatos, CA - May 26, 2011 - By a proclamation at its June 1, 2011 regular meeting, the Saratoga City Council is declaring June as Men's Health Month in Saratoga. Drs. Edward Karpman and Patrick Wherry, co-medical directors of the Men's Health Program at El Camino Hospital Los Gatos, along with Ms. Bido Baines, executive director of the hospital's urology services, will accept the proclamation.

"Many of the health issues that men face can be treated or prevented through a healthy lifestyle that includes preventative screenings, smart eating habits, and physical activity," says Manny Cappello, Saratoga City Councilmember." In the City of Saratoga, we take great care to ensure our residents have access to the recreational resources they need to stay healthy. We have an extensive trail network, parks throughout the City where residents can engage in all sorts of activities and sports, and offer a wide range of recreational classes that support physical fitness among all ages and interests."

A key service at El Camino Hospital Los Gatos is its comprehensive urology program, which includes leading-edge equipment and methods for treating prostate cancer and other malignancies, kidney stones, incontinence, and BPH (enlarged prostate). In addition, the hospital recently opened the Men's Health Center, the only comprehensive hospital-based program in Santa Clara County that focuses on male urologic issues.

The focus of the Men's Health Center is treatment for sexual health issues such as erectile dysfunction or low testosterone, common to men as they age. What the center also offers men, unlike clinics that just dispense pills for ED, is a thorough review by board-certified urologists of a man's overall health. Urologists can then make referrals to other specialists such as internists, cardiologists, gastroenterologists, endocrinologists or orthopedists if needed.

"Often underlying or potential health issues may be contributing to a man's sexual dysfunction problem," Dr. Karman explains. "Because we offer full services, from diagnostic evaluation to a range of treatments, the Men's Health Center is really a one-stop resource for men."

"We appreciate that the City of Saratoga is helping to raise awareness of the special health needs of men," says Bido Baines. "Men typically don't seek medical attention as often as women do, so when men are better informed about healthy lifestyles, screenings and the importance of seeking help when symptoms arise, the healthier they will stay as they age."

The June City Council meeting will be held in the Saratoga Civic Theater, located at 13777 Fruitvale Avenue in Saratoga. The meeting starts at 7:00 p.m.
