For youth with developmental disabilities who reside in San Jose and surrounding cities, Camp Via West is a place to grow, develop and thrive. This summer camp empowers campers and their families with a variety of programs, including Youth Healthcare Services, which is made possible with support from the Community Benefit Grant Program.
Many campers have underlying health conditions or dual diagnoses, such as heart disease, high blood pressure or diabetes, in addition to autism, cerebral palsy, spina bifida or Down syndrome. With Community Benefit program funding, Camp Via West can help staff a health center manager, registered nurses (RNs) and healthcare trainees.
Each camper receives a health screening before attending camp. During a camp session, campers participate in daily, 30-minute mental wellness activities. Examples include journaling, yoga or crafting.
Health center staff and camp counselors also take a heat and sun safety training. The Youth Healthcare Services program helps expand healthcare access and delivery to individuals with disabilities or special needs in our community, one of the critical needs identified in the Implementation Strategy Report and Community Benefit Plan.
