At El Camino Health, we believe that your health starts on your plate. Making better food choices helps protect our bodies from illness, support recovery and maintain lifelong wellness. To put this message into practice, we kicked off the Food is Health Community Recipe Challenge this past spring.
Each month, we share an easy, healthy recipe on social media — dishes like sweet potato and black bean quesadillas or one-pot tomato basil pasta. Challenge participants cook the recipe and then share a photo or video with us on social media or via email for a chance to win a prize.
Ultimately, the challenge raises awareness of the importance of what we eat and our health. It also makes it simple, fun and approachable to incorporate healthy recipes into daily life for positive habits going forward.
“I cook regularly and like to try healthy recipes all the time,” shares Hema Mehta, occupational therapist at El Camino Health. “In May, I made the quesadilla as part of the recipe challenge, as it was whole and healthy food and fun to make and eat. I shared the photo of the dish and ended up winning!”

Just as nutritious foods fuel our bodies, so does regular movement. Walking is a great way to get the right amount of physical activity every week. It’s low-impact, low-cost and perfect for anyone who wants to ease into an active routine.
Our Food is Health Community Wellness Walks launched in June. Those who sign up for a monthly walk not only benefit from physical activity, but also health education and social connection. A wellness expert leads each walk, giving a brief overview of a health topic and answering questions. Join our upcoming Wellness Walks with family and friends!
We’ve participated in several events in the past few months promoting healthy eating and movement in our community. Email us at foodishealth@elcaminohealth.org to find out where we’ll be next and come check out the Food is Health booth!
“It has been great promoting the Food is Health Recipe Challenge and Wellness Walks,” shares Leela Kunhiraman, health education coordinator at El Camino Health. “Walking together builds more than steps — it builds connection, energy and a path to better health.”
