Community Benefit partner Chinese Health Initiative (CHI) addresses the unique health needs of the Chinese community in our region. With funding from El Camino Health’s Community Benefit program, they provide bilingual, culturally appropriate health education, including workshops and webinars on diabetes care and prevention.

The Chinese Health Initiative (CHI) delivers culturally and linguistically competent outreach and education to support the health of the Chinese community in our region. With support from El Camino Health’s Community Benefit Grant Program, CHI offers specialty programs that promote awareness and prevention of health conditions commonly affecting the Chinese population ‒ specifically, hypertension and diabetes.

At senior centers, community centers and virtual events, CHI shares bilingual resources and hosts events, such as:

  • Educational diabetes workshops
  • Monthly Ask-a-Dietitian webinars about making healthy diet choices
  • Ask-a-Doctor webinars about diabetes and prevention
  • A 4-month Diabetes Prevention Series focused on diet, exercise, sleep and stress-management, along with monthly support groups and prediabetes screenings
  • Monthly workshops led by mental health professionals

Additionally, CHI maintains a physician network of over 100 Chinese-speaking physicians to help lower barriers to culturally competent care.

Overall, CHI’s programs improve healthcare access and delivery, specifically related to diabetes, one of the critical needs outlined in the fiscal year 2026 Implementation Strategy Report and Community Benefit Plan.
