Maternal-Fetal Medicine Consult
Maternal-fetal medicine specialists are obstetricians with advanced training in managing high-risk pregnancies. They step in if your pregnancy needs closer monitoring due to medical risks or concerns. Working closely with you and your OB/GYN, they create a care plan that supports your health and your baby’s development.
Our specialists can help if you’ve had a high-risk pregnancy in the past, have a chronic health condition or develop unexpected complications during your pregnancy. During consultations, they’ll review your medical and pregnancy history, explain how it may affect your baby and offer recommendations tailored to your needs.
Your OB/GYN will connect you with a maternal-fetal medicine specialist if closer monitoring is needed, with consultations available both in person and virtually.
Genetic Counseling
Pregnancy often raises new questions, especially if your history or screening results suggest increased risks. Our genetic counselors provide clarity by helping you interpret your family and medical history, explaining the chance of inherited conditions and guiding you through testing and management options.
Genetic counseling is especially important for high-risk pregnancies. Your provider may refer you to genetic counseling if you have:
- A family history of genetic conditions
- An abnormal prenatal screening, DNA test or ultrasound
- Exposure to harmful substances that may affect your baby, like certain medications, infections or alcohol
- Repeated miscarriages
Our counselors will review your results, discuss what they mean and connect you to the right programs and specialists to plan your baby’s care.
How Do I Make a Genetic Counseling Appointment?
Your OB/GYN or provider must send a referral to the El Camino Health/Stanford Children’s Health Perinatal Diagnostic Center. Once we receive it, our office will contact you to schedule your appointment.
What Should I Do Before My Appointment?
Before your visit, one of our genetic counselors will reach out to learn more about your pregnancy and family history. You’ll need to complete a genetic counseling questionnaire. If your appointment is virtual, you’ll receive telehealth login instructions ahead of time.
What Happens After My Appointment?
We’ll share all recommendations and test results with you and your provider as soon as possible. If your baby is diagnosed with a genetic condition, our counselors work closely with the Stanford Children’s Fetal and Pregnancy Health Program to explain your baby’s condition, guide the next steps and help you plan for a safe delivery.
