Request Care — Contact Us
Most patients come to us based on a referral from another healthcare provider, or to get a second opinion. Current patients also can request an appointment through the myCare patient portal.
How to Prepare for Your Cancer Consultation
As a new patient, when you contact our Cancer Care team, we connect you with a new patient coordinator (also called an oncology coordinator). Your coordinator helps gather information about you, including:
- Who referred you to us for cancer care
- Your health insurance information
- Any current symptoms or concerns
- Any medical records you might have, such as pathology reports, imaging or doctor notes
Then, they confirm that your insurance is accepted. They also request any medical information or test results from your current health providers, as needed. In the meantime, they schedule your initial cancer consultation, usually within 48 hours.
What to Bring to Your First Appointment
To help make the most of your first cancer care appointment, please bring:
- Your insurance card and current photo ID
- A list of your current medications, including over-the-counter medication, supplements and herbs
- A list of questions for your doctor
- A notebook and pen or another way to take notes
Most patients also bring a trusted loved one or caregiver with them to their appointments. A person you trust by your side can make it easier to know what questions to ask at your first cancer appointment. They can also help you take notes and understand your treatment options.
Translation and Interpreter Services Available
You have the right to understand your medical options — regardless of how you best receive information. We offer interpreting assistance for people who are hearing impaired, do not speak English or have limited English speaking skills. All patients can use our telephone-based service, with more than 150 languages.
You can also receive all elements of your care from Mandarin-speaking staff, including your oncologist, medical scribe and schedulers.
Let your coordinator know if you need translation or interpreter services.
What to Expect at Your Cancer Appointment
Your first Cancer Care appointment will be at one of two locations within our Cancer Center. You can find free, unreserved parking for patients and visitors in front of our Los Gatos building and valet services at Mountain View.
After our staff greets you at the door, a medical assistant guides you to a private exam room. They take your vital signs, including your height and weight. Then, you meet with your cancer doctor. They review your medical records and talk with you about how you’re feeling.
Cancer Treatments
Your doctor may order more testing for you, so they can understand your condition. To make an accurate diagnosis, they may need to talk to other doctors with different areas of expertise. Together, your team confirms your cancer diagnosis and recommends cancer treatment.
How Long Does a Cancer Consultation Take?
Your first appointment at our Cancer Center usually lasts about 30 minutes.
