Breast Reconstruction Options
At El Camino Health, we recognize that every woman’s journey is unique, which is why we offer a wide range of breast reconstruction techniques. Our goal is to help patients choose the option that best suits their lifestyle, aesthetic goals and medical needs. Our surgeons are skilled in the latest technologies and techniques to ensure natural-looking results.
Implant-Based Reconstruction
One option is implant-based reconstruction, which involves inserting saline or silicone implants to recreate the breast shape. We can perform this procedure as a one- or two-stage operation depending on the patient’s circumstances and preferences.
- With one-stage, or immediate, reconstruction, we place a breast implant into the breast pocket at the same time as a mastectomy.
- In the more common two-stage reconstruction, we first place a temporary tissue expander during the mastectomy to create a pocket for the future implant. In the second stage surgery, we remove the tissue expander and replace it with an implant.
Autologous Tissue Reconstruction
Also known as “flap” surgery, autologous tissue reconstruction is a technique that uses tissue transplanted from other parts of the body, such as the abdomen, back, thighs or buttocks, to reconstruct the breast. Techniques include the TRAM flap, DIEP flap, latissimus dorsi flap and gracilis flap. These methods can offer a more natural feel and appearance, as they use the patient’s own tissue.
Insurance and Financial Guidance
The Women’s Health and Cancer Rights Act of 1998 (WHCRA) requires health insurance plans that cover mastectomies to also cover breast reconstruction surgery, surgery on the other breast to create symmetry and other post-mastectomy benefits. The specific procedures and amount of coverage vary by policy, so please check with your insurance provider.
