Supporting Heart and Oral Health in Our Community

February highlighted heart and oral health, but the need for prevention and access to care continues year-round. Learn how El Camino Health and our Community Benefit partners are expanding access to healthcare services and supporting prevention efforts across our community.

In February, we recognized two important public health observances: American Heart Month and National Children’s Dental Health Month (NCDHM). The need for prevention and education, however, continues year-round. Heart health and oral health are essential to overall well-being, and research suggests they are closely connected.

Heart disease remains the leading cause of death in the United States and affects some communities more than others, much like dental disease. Children living in poverty, for example, are significantly more likely to experience cavities and untreated dental conditions.

Poor oral health, particularly gum disease, can allow bacteria to enter the bloodstream, potentially contributing to inflammation that may damage blood vessels and increase the risk of heart disease. Establishing healthy oral hygiene habits early in life supports long-term oral and overall health.

Healthcare Access and Delivery (including oral health) is a priority need identified in El Camino Health’s FY2026 Implementation Strategy Report and Community Benefit Plan. To address this need, El Camino Health invests in organizations that strengthen prevention efforts and expand access to care across our community. This includes support for prevention, education, and early screening, as well as expanding access to direct clinical services. For example:

  • Chinese Health Initiative focuses on culturally and linguistically competent hypertension and diabetes education
  • Health Mobile provides mobile comprehensive dental services for low-income and unhoused individuals, serving all ages throughout San Jose
  • Healthier Kids Foundation offers dental and hearing screenings for children in San Jose and Campbell
  • South Asian Heart Center leads culturally competent heart disease and diabetes prevention programs.
