For example, a Carnegie Mellon University study, published in Psychology and Aging in 2013, found that adults ages 51 to 91 who volunteered on a regular basis were less likely to develop high blood pressure than nonvolunteers. The lead study author theorizes that volunteer work could increase physical activity among people who otherwise aren’t very active and may also reduce stress.
