Big Basin Redwoods State Park (Boulder Creek—about 35 miles southwest of San Jose)
Walk among ancient coast redwoods in California’s oldest state park, established in 1902, which has more than 80 miles of trails with hikes ranging from easy to strenuous. Easy, guided walks include the half-mile Redwood Loop Walk, which is wheelchair and stroller accessible, and the three-mile dog-friendly walk, which welcomes wheelchairs. The park’s Junior Rangers program teaches children ages 7 to 12 about plants, animals, geology and out- door skills through games and exploration. For more info, visit Big Basin.

Baylands Nature Preserve (Palo Alto)
This 1,940-acre protected marshland has 15 miles of trails for walking, running or biking, with opportunities for bird-watching and nature education. Windsurfing and non-motorized boating are also permitted. For more info, visit Baylands Nature Preserve.

Blackberry Farm Park (Cupertino)
Plan a day at the pool. Kids love the waterslide and picnic at this family-friendly park. Additional attractions include bocce ball and volleyball courts, and a nine-hole golf course. The Stevens Creek Trail, which runs through the park, connects to McClellan Ranch Preserve, another public park that was a horse ranch in the 1930s and 1940s. For more info, visit Blackberry Farm.
