Neurointerventional Services

Your El Camino Health healthcare partners lead the way in the use of an innovative treatment approach called neurointervention.

Neurointerventional Services | El Camino Health

Neurointervention is a highly effective, yet minimally invasive way to treat stroke, aneurysms, arteriovenous malformations (AVMs) and other disorders of the brain and spine.

During conventional brain surgery, a neurosurgeon opens the skull to expose the brain. By contrast, neurointervention specialists can perform brain procedures with only a small incision, in the groin.

Your neurointerventionist inserts a thin, flexible tube, called a catheter, into a blood vessel in the groin and threads it through to reach the brain or other areas being treated. Advanced imaging technology makes all this possible. Sophisticated machines transmit clear, real-time pictures that give your specialist a precise, accurate guide throughout the procedure.

This less invasive approach can result in less injury to surrounding tissues and shorter recovery times than traditional surgery.

Smart Options for Stroke and Other Brain Disorders

There are many ways that El Camino Health's neurointervention specialists can use this innovation to help you or your loved ones:

  • Deliver clot-dissolving medications, such as tPA, directly to a blood clot, which can save time and lives when seconds count.
  • After initial stroke diagnosis and treatment, further identify its causes and recommend steps you can take to prevent a future stroke.
  • Insert a stent, which is a narrow tube of mesh-like material used to keep a formerly blocked blood vessel open.
  • Deliver tiny clot-removal devices directly to the affected area in your brain.
  • Reduce the blood supply to certain types of head and neck tumors, which assists in surgically removing them.

Any time you need skilled, specialized treatment for brain or spinal conditions, your El Camino Health experts will opt for the least invasive, most effective options. In some cases, traditional surgery may be the best treatment option. We work together, discussing your symptoms and other unique factors to determine the best treatment plan for you.
